Controversy[ edit ] Anthropologist Helen Fisher in What happens in the dating world can reflect larger currents within popular culture. For example, when the book The Rules appeared, it touched off media controversy about how men and women should relate to each other, with different positions taken by New York Times columnist Maureen Dowd and British writer Kira Cochrane of The Guardian. Sara McCorquodale suggests that women meeting strangers on dates meet initially in busy public places, share details of upcoming dates with friends or family so they know where they’ll be and who they’ll be with, avoid revealing one’s surname or address, and conducting searches on them on the Internet prior to the date.

The history continues Though the training of racehorses is still one of the principal occupations of the inhabitants, East Ilsley is chiefly noted for its sheep fair, which is one of the largest in England. The markets are held by arrangement once or twice a month on Wednesdays from January to September. They increased rapidly until the middle of the 18th century, no less than 80, sheep being penned in one day and 55, sold, the yearly average amounting to , There is also a hiring fare in October.
The wool fair has increased in importance and has been much encouraged by the annual presentation of two silver cups given by the Marquess of Downshire and other landowners to be competed for by the wool staplers and farmers. At one of the agricultural meetings formerly held at Ilsley the chairman wore a coat made from fleeces shorn in the morning, made into cloth at Newbury, and fashioned into a coat before the evening.
A plaque in the centre of the village records this. Being famous for its sheep farming, it is not surprising that Berkshire was one of the many counties to have developed its own breed of sheep: Sadly, it is now extinct, but the Hampshire Down is a direct descendant. There are some wonderfully evocative photos of a late nineteenth century sheep fair at Ilsley taken by the photographer Henry Taunt, which you can view on the English Heritage ViewFinder site.

As a county bounded by the River Thames, water fowl are obviously endemic to the locality and swans are common, so the emblem is certainly a meaningful and representative one. The specific design of the flag however is based upon the arms used by the Buckinghamshire County Council, which in turn are evidently derived from heraldic badges variously borne by local nobility, in the post Anglo-Saxon era.
This is the form used on the Buckinghamshire flag. The swan emblem appears to have originated with a man bearing the Danish name of Sweyn, grandfather of one Henry of Essex, a 12th century Sheriff of Buckingham. While this is an early linkage of the swan emblem with the county town, it was a family badge, a similar heraldic device to a coat of arms and was used wherever the family was resident or active. The swan badge came to the Mandeville family through marriage and inheritance and then when the last male Mandeville died in passed to the de Bohun family through the same process.
The swan is shown here atop the De Bohun coat of arms on a seal used to secure documents by being stamped into melted wax although it appears not to have a coronet and chain in this depiction. A century later Eleanor Alianora de Bohun and her sister Mary, children of the last male member of the de Bohuns, continued to use the swan badge.
She married Henry Bolingbroke, later to become King Henry IV and was the mother of Henry V, who in turn included the swan on his standard Eleanor de Bohun also used the swan as her badge and her tomb in Westminster Abbey includes decorative swans She married Thomas of Woodstock, the youngest son of Edward III, who had received the title Earl of Buckingham in and thus definitively initiated the association between Buckinghamshire and the swan emblem.
Stafford employed the collared swan emblem as his personal badge and the association of this swan with the county of Buckinghamshire probably became established during his lifetime.

West Berkshire War Memorials This site run by Phil Wood will give you details of all the memorials in West Berkshire with details of the men commemorated. Most towns and villages have their war memorial, usually dating from the First World War and added to for the Second World War. In many cases the churches too have their memorials and often there is a Roll of Honour which lists all the names of men from that area who served, whereas the main memorials list only those who died.
However there are many other memorials and one of our objectives is to identify all these others. Just for starters consider: There are memorials going back to the Civil War in the 17th Century and right up to date from all sorts of other conflicts. Most villages and churches have both First and Second World War memorialss. You may wish to design your own village page and provide a link to your own website to give the extra details.
If you would like us to display your information on this website then we suggest you construct a document containing the name of your village and of the memorial and then any or all of the following: We will then post your document on this website.
